Ban

This is the most general term for something being prohibited, often by law or official rule. It implies a complete restriction.

  • Example: “The city council voted to ban smoking in all public parks.”

Forbid

This suggests a prohibition with an element of authority. It’s often used for someone in a position of power telling someone else what they can’t do.

  • Example: “My parents forbade me from going to that party.”

Bar

Two main uses: * Prohibit entry or access: Similar to ban, but often refers to physical blocking or preventing someone from entering a place.

  * Example: "The bouncer barred the unruly customer from entering the bar."

* **Prevent something from happening:** This usage is less common than ban or forbid, but it can suggest creating an obstacle or hindrance.

  * Example: "High tuition fees bar many students from attending college." (Here, the fees don't literally forbid anyone, but they make it very difficult).
